Creative Critical Reflection

1.      How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues?

My product doesn’t follow the normal rules of a commercial, which is to show off a product and convince the audience to buy it. While it does appeal to certain social groups like athletes and people who are into exercising, it doesn’t try to show off a product entirely. The brand I decided to use doesn’t rely on convincing people for one specific product but instead they focus more on conveying their message: just do it. Because of this my product doesn’t follow the conventions of a commercial and instead I also try to convey their message. Although it wasn’t a goal at first the fact I did use to different people with two different body types helps to convey that message even more and at the same time it does help the product that was slightly focused on. The idea of having multiple body types not only represents more people but also shows that sports and athleticism isn’t specific to certain kinds of people and it takes the stereotype away that you need to be “fit” to be an athlete or play a sport.

2. How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?

My product focuses on bringing out the parts of a persons drive to work harder and do what may be in the back or front of their head. Whether it is in sports or out in life to keep working. Perhaps I didn’t do that to the best of my ability, but it was something I was aiming to represent.  Distributing this on YouTube where many people have access to it and a big platform that it is, is a great way to spread my product. YouTube brings many people together and is an excellent platform for new things with how many people are constantly searching through it.

3.      How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

During the project I believe that my way at looking at an idea has changed. I realize that while working on any product no matter how planned out the ideas will change and your knowledge on the topic will broaden. Working with a camera has become easier since I’ve had more recent interaction with it and trying out new shots allows for a more dynamic video which can attract the audience. During the post-production phase I’ve realized that I’ve become more organized and just like with my cinematography recently using the equipment made it easier and more familiar to work with which lessened the amount of time I worked.

4. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?

Throughout the project I heavily relied on technologies throughout all phases of the project. Since planning I used the internet to research what kind of commercials the brand I was using makes, then understanding the meaning behind them, as well as watching other homemade commercials of the brand to see what they had in common. While creating the story board I used my camera to map out the shots to give me more of a visual of what it would seem like and decide if I liked the shot or not. This allowed me to create a more concrete storyboard to follow and helped develop my ideas of where I wanted the project to go. During production phase of the project using my camera and props were the most essential as well as using a phone’s built in flashlight as a make-shift light to help balance the shots to make them seem as similar in lighting as I could. With the planning I had made in the storyboard and personally acting it out, it helped when placing the props and directing the talent on what to do, which made the production phase much easier. After getting all the shots using the software wasn’t as hard since I was more familiar with it. Since all the footage was good all I had to do was place, cut, and revise to execute the film.
