How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues?
My product uses the conventions for a pop music video by having a short love story, props and actors that are well dressed, and has a color grading that fits the mood of the song. Although it does follow these conventions it does not have a segment where the characters are singing the song that strays apart from the story. Throughout the whole video a story is told and that’s all there was happening. The characters aren’t portrayed in a sexual manner to the audience which is also common among pop videos. There are no major scenes where the characters are out dancing at a club or partying, but instead they are shown slow dancing to the song in the final scene. This was to match the use of conventions that were shown in the original music video. The only main difference was the story and the bright lights which weren’t used. This product isn’t intended to target any social groups or issues in specific, but because of the genre and the language of the music it can target many people from foreign Spanish- speaking countries. Although the video is in a foreign language the story behind the video is not just for those who can understand it. The only issue that could’ve been present is the problems between couples, in which the people in the relationship are young and figuring out their lives. This can cause problems for people in these relationships and may seek help from a trusted friend or a professional. That’s what happened in this video, the couple decided to seek help from a professional to work on their relationship.
2. How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?
My product is made to attract the audience through the story being told. It doesn’t have any characters that may stand out to the eye in a sexual manner or with someone well known. It connects with the people in the audience who have been in a relationship or are in a relationship where problems are frequent. While it is mainly focused on those in a relationship or who have been in some, it can show to those who haven’t been in a relationship what it can be like. This video is a short music video which wouldn’t be shown in any movie theatres but can be posted on a video site like YouTube where millions of people can watch at any time.
How did your production skills develop throughout this project?
This project has taught me to focus on timing. While everything else was done in a good amount of time my timing for filming was not good. I managed to research and plan in a short amount of time to prepare for when I would film, but because of the actors that I planned on working with I had to film at midnight. While this was a main aspect that I learned from this project, I also learned much about filming under pressure and the kind of angles to use for car scenes and a scene where actors are sitting. Planning for a project with a short amount of time has become easier over time and knowing what kind of story I want shown in my video. One skill that hasn’t improved is drawing what I want to be shown, I can imagine it in my head, but putting it down on a piece of paper is the hard part. One thing I have noticed that has improved is my editing. I’m able to edit at a much faster pace and it has helped to make it faster so I can see if I need anything else to be filmed.
4. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?
I used technology throughout this entire project to plan, film, edit, and post. I used the internet to research the conventions of the genre of music, to plan for my video, and to record everything that’s happened in this project. I used my camera, a Canon to film this video. Although the camera is meant for photography it worked well for filming. I didn’t use any other items to help the camera during filming, but I used other props to dress my actors and to create a room that resembled a therapist's office. For the final scene I used LED candles to resemble actual candles and a built-in-flashlight from my phone to add extra lighting. The only other technologies used was a laptop that had an editing software by Adobe. These were the technologies used throughout the entire project.
