Research Blog: Music Video Conventions

Hey guys, so for this blog I'm going to be talking about what I found for conventions in this songs genre. To begin with the songs genre is pop. They focus on bright colors and usually have the artist be the main character in the video. Most of the time their really isn't a story but luckily this songs music video does and I plan on telling a similar one. The idea for pop music videos is to sell the song and the artist to get the most amount of attention and sales through performance of the artist. For this song the creators didn't do that. Instead they told a sad story with a beautiful message, they did however use the artist with make up to make him and the actress who played his wife, appear old. They didn't focus on using the artist's body or face to sell the song and music video, they simply used the song and the message it conveyed. Unlike many other pop music videos which sometimes sexualize the artist to appeal to their audience. They also didn't have other props and actors in the background to appeal to another audience. While pop songs focus on telling a happy story with a positive vibe, this songs video had a pretty sad story but ended with a positive message. By not using the happy story and choosing not to sell the idea of a perfect relationship, I believe this song had a more powerful impact toward the audience and the artist really conveyed the message of the song. The idea of using a sad story with a positive message isn't entirely uncommon and has been used in other song within the same genre. Something worthy mention is the artists past songs and music videos portray him as someone who likes to go to clubs and as a womanizer. In those songs he follows the conventions for a pop music video, but in this one he takes a completely different approach to them. This song is completely unconventional in terms of the lyrics for the artist and the video for it's genre. Overall the artist, directors, and producers did a great job in creating the video despite following its conventions.
