Genre Research: Action & Horror
Hey guys so for this blog I'll be telling you about the genres action and horror.
Action films focus on showing destructive scenes and many high paced shots. This goes towards the fighting in many action movies along with explosions. To create this directors often rely on many high angled shots, close-ups, aerial shots, and medium shots. These angles usually show the most action and is where a fight may take place or where something may blow up. Although action movies are high paced they use lowkey lighting and motivated lights. The lowkey lighting can be used to highlight certain aspects of a scene along with a close-up and motivated lighting works with medium shots to display everything happening in a scene. Action movies like many other movies rely on the sound. Ambient sound is very common in action movies and lets the audience connect themselves with the movie. Make up and props, usually match the scene and adds to the realism found in action movies.
Action movies are filled with fighting and crazy stunts that would never happen normally and through these props it can be explained. The make up connects the actors into the scene and it is common for them to be covered in blood and bruises or just be dirty with dirt.
Horror films focus on scaring their watchers and much like a thriller they hook the audience to get the most reaction out of them. Horror movies use lowkey lighting which adds a very eerie feeling to the movie and use spotlight in order to guide the audience to a specific part of the scene. With the lighting camera techniques such as hand held shots are common in order to fully submerse the audience into a film. Zooms are also a common technique which is used with spotlight lighting to bring more attention to certain scenes. Sound for horror movies usually consist of sounds that are associated with something creepy like the creaking of a floorboard or a door. Music usually consists of high pitched instruments like a violin and even pianos using low chords which all serve to create sound that wouldn't naturally be there and further scare the audience. Common locations in a horror film are usually dark areas where not much can be seen, they also use props that are meant to hurt people in a gruesome way. Make up usually consists of a lot of blood and works with special effects to create a gruesome death usually involving organs near the stomach.
