Title Research: The Invisible Man
Hey guys, so for this blog I'll be focusing on the opening sequence of "The Invisible Man" released in 2020. The opening sequence for this film starts with the production companies intro. The intro itself plays a big role in the opening sequence. The intro shows many things happening at once like a floating chair, in a run down room with books moving through the air. This alone sets the film to seem like a horror. It's followed by showing a flickering camera that then shows a girl in a white dress. There is no sound in the intro besides the flickering of the flight. These parts of the opening sequence help set up what's going to happen next. It then shows a big wave hitting against a rock that reveals hidden words on top of it. These words are the names of the companies involved creating the film as well as the name of the film. It shows a still camera looking at the wave come up and down slowly revealing the titles and then dripping until they disappear again. It is believed that one main purpose for this is because water and liquids serve a purpose in the protagonist reaching their goal. By showing the water reveal these invisible letters it represents how the protagonist will later stop the antagonist. The scene is shot in the dark with very little light and has the sound of a wave hitting against the rock. There is also non-diegetic sound in the back slowly rising through the opening sequence. These are all aspects found in a thriller and is a clear example of how the director sets the tone for the film. Around the end the camera tilts up to reveal a house on the edge of a mountain with bright lights and a modern design. This serves to show the location of the film, but to signify the end of the opening sequence as well. There aren't any cuts in this opening sequence and the only editing is the animation used that reveals wet letters dripping until they disappear and reveal new ones with a new wave. By showing slow waves hitting against a rock, it can also show the pace of the film and how it will be seen through the audience. Instead of showing flashy titles or an intense scene the darkness, and peace of waves hitting the rock adds a suspense to the film that is further intensified by the sound of an eerie tone in the back.
