Title Research: Antebellum

 Hey guys, for this blog I'll be telling you about the opening sequence to "Antebellum" a movie released in 2020. The movie starts by introducing the two main productions involved and a quote that resembles penmanship of ink and quill. It begins to name the main cast of the film, production team, music team, executive producers, writers, directors, and costume designers. The film shows a big house with land around it. It seems to take place in the nineteenth century, during the United States of America's civil war. The location seems to be a house where there are black workers, slaves, building a tent and doing laundry. They also show soldiers with guns around the area walking around in groups and keep control of the place. There are horses everywhere used to transport items and some meant for the soldiers to ride. I believe this was shown to explain the setting of where the film will take place and what it may most likely focus on. The movie does provide many aspects of a thriller through the lighting being slightly dark even though it is the morning. They also used a long take throughout the entire opening sequence revealing new parts of the area. These all serve to build anxiety in the film. The opening sequence also shows a soldier putting up a confederate flag, as the music rises on that scene. This brings the audience to focus on the flag and helps clarify the setting of the film. This music played a huge role in this opening sequence. It was a quiet sound at first of a piano and violin playing a low melody that eventually rises as more things become present. The first significant increase in the music was after showing the confederate flag. It was then followed when the soldiers started to run towards what seems to be a black couple with guns in hand. This scene shows the soldiers pulling the man away while the woman screams on the floor. The scene although quiet besides the loud music playing adds a powerful meaning to the opening sequence. This part of the long take sets the tone for the entire film showing what happens at this house while the little girl who was picking flowers happily lives her life. These parts of the opening sequence help to show how the movie rises with anxiety and suspense throughout the entire film, to show a deeper meaning behind the film.
